Sudoku Logic: The Reasoning Patterns That Solve Every Puzzle

Every sudoku puzzle ever published has one thing in common: it can be solved with pure logic. No guessing, no luck — just careful reasoning. This article explains the core logic patterns, from the basics to the techniques that unlock hard puzzles.

Why Sudoku Is Pure Logic

Each cell in the grid has exactly one correct value, and the rules (1–9 once per row, column, and box) let you eliminate possibilities one by one. Every technique below is just a systematic way of eliminating options until only one remains.

Level 1: Naked Singles

A naked single is a cell with only one possible value. Look at the cell's row, column, and box; if eight of the nine digits are already used elsewhere, the remaining digit must go in.

This is the workhorse of easy puzzles. Scan repeatedly, filling naked singles as you spot them.

Level 2: Hidden Singles

Sometimes a digit can only go in one cell of a group, even though that cell has several candidates. This is a hidden single.

Example: in a row, the digit 7 might be missing, and only one empty cell in that row can accept a 7 (because 7 is already present in that cell's column and box everywhere else). That cell gets the 7.

Level 3: Pairs and Locked Candidates

As puzzles get harder, single-cell logic stops being enough.

Naked pair: two cells in the same group with the same two candidates. Those two digits must occupy those two cells, so you can remove them from every other cell in the group.

Pointing pair: a digit appears in only two cells of a box, and both cells share a row or column. The digit must be in one of those two spots, so you can remove it from the rest of that row or column outside the box.

Level 4: The Advanced Toolkit

For hard and expert puzzles, you'll reach for techniques like:

  • X-Wing — a rectangular pattern that eliminates a digit from two rows and two columns
  • XY-Wing — a three-cell chain that removes a shared candidate
  • Swordfish — an extension of X-Wing across three rows or columns
  • Chains and coloring — tracing what-if logic across the grid
